The Beagle is a breed with such a friendly, loving nature that it’s perfect for just about any family dynamic. Because of their high energy level and need for regular exercise, they work best with active families or those that have a yard where they can have plenty of time to roam and run.
When people think at Beagles, they imagine a pack of these little guys baying at the top of their lungs as they were hunting or racing after a rabbit-bait. Centuries ago, the breeding of these dogs started in the purpose of hunting and they are designed for chasing rabbits or foxes, but their character makes them also wonderful family pets.
The sense of smell of the Beagle dogs is keen and they have inherited a strong hunting instinct. The dogs of this breed are grouped by the American Kennel Club’s regulation into two varieties by their size, under thirteen inches and between thirteen to fifteen inches. There are no other differences in the physical aspect of the dogs of both Beagle varieties but their size. The beagle has dark eyes, droopy ears, and a long tail. Its coat is short and most commonly comes in a combination of tan, black and white colors. You can also find orange, black, or tan dogs with white markings.
Friendly, loyal, loving and playful are all qualities that make them excellent family pets. Homes with other dogs, pets and children can all welcome the Beagle as part of the family. They require minimal socialization and actually enjoy the companionship of other pets and their family. These are energetic dogs and they require plenty of play time, exercise and regular walks from their owners. They have this tendency of exploring and following new scents, so they sould be kept in a fenced yard when they are let to stay alone outside or in leash when they are took by their owner on a walk. These dogs are not good guard dogs, as they are not at all aggressive but quite friendly with strangers, instead they make good watch dogs, as they are used to bark a lot to signal the hunter they are on the scent.
At the begining, the beagle dogs were bred in England as a scent hound, and was designed to hunt rabbits, quails and foxes. While on hunting, they can do well alone, though they often hunt in pairs or packs. They also make very good tracking dogs or narcotic dogs, due to their excellent sense of smell. The majority of the Beagle dogs living today in the United States are companion dogs, or they are used for hunting and rabbit races.
People who are wanting for an affectionate breed of dogs that love to play with children and enjoy the family companionship can find in the Beagles the ideal dogs for them.
