Choosing a Good Beagle Breeder

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Beagle!

You are looking for that perfect beagle pup that will fit into your home and have decided that getting your puppy from a reputable beagle breeder is the best way to go. But how do you go about finding good beagle breeders and knowing for sure that they are dedicated to raising healthy, good-natured dogs?

Get Some Recommendations

Your best bet on finding reputable beagle breeders is by getting some recommendations from people who know good dog breeders from bad dog breeders. Check with Vets, dog trainers, visit dog shows, local breed clubs and anywhere else where there are people who work with beagles on a regular basis. These people know good breeders from bad and will be happy to recommend someone they feel is a good and responsible breeder.

Check The Breeder Out For Yourself

Armed with a list of two, three or four beagle breeders, it is time to contact the breeders and check them out for yourself. While recommendations are great you want to be able to trust the breeder you get your new puppy from and ensure yourself he is being raised in the healthiest most loving way possible.

The first thing you need to do is contact the breeder and ask if you can schedule a visit. Any breeder who is not thrilled to have you come see their breeding facility more than likely has something to hide and you move on to the next name on your list. A good breeder not only will allow you to visit their facility but, they are eager to meet you and judge for themselves whether or not you may be a right fit for one of their puppies. Once you arrive on the premises, here are some things you need to take the time to observe.

  • The overall cleanliness of the breeder premises.
  • The amount and quality of equipment that the breeder has on the premises. Someone who is truly dedicated to improving the breed will have whelp beds and other equipment for the purpose of making sure that their dogs are comfortable and well taken care of.
  • The area where the dogs are kept. Do the dogs have both an outside play area and a climate-controlled area so that all their needs can be met.
  • Ask to see the Dam and the Sire. Keep in mind that in many cases the Sire may not be on the premises. Reputable beagle breeders breed for certain characteristics which means that often they pay for stud service from another breeder. However, they should be able and even happy to discuss with you the sire’s personality and other traits. They should also be more than willing to show you the dam.
  • The breeder will also have questions for you, and in fact you may well feel like you are being interrogated. While this can be a little nerve wracking, it should prove to you that not only does the beagle breeder want the best home for his pups but also wants to make sure that one of his pups is the best fit for your family.

Finding good beagle breeders is a matter of finding someone who loves dogs, loves the breed and cares what happens to his puppies both while in his care and after they leave his care.
