Beagles are such popular small dogs that it is hard to imagine anyone not loving this adorable breed. Perhaps, that is why people find themselves creating all sorts of different mixed breeds using the beagle as one of the breeds. In the olden days any dog that was not a purebred was considered to be a mutt. Today these mutts are more often than not called designer dogs and some of these designer dogs are in high demand with celebrities and non-celebrities alike.
Keep in mind that a beagle mix will likely have both physical and personality characteristics of both the beagle and whatever breed they are bred with. So if any of these beagle mix dogs interest you be sure you take the time to learn the personality traits of both dogs so that you will have some idea of what to expect from these new designer breeds. That being said here are some of the more popular beagle mix breeds.
- Puggle- cross between a pug and a beagle.
- Poogle- a poodle and beagle mix
- Cheagle- a Chihuahua and beagle mix
- Peabull- a cross between an American bulldog and a beagle
- Speagle an English toy spaniel and beagle mix
- Raggle-cross between a rat terrier and a beagle
- Doxle -cross between a beagle and dachshund.
Beagles have also been crossed with Labradors, various other hounds, Corgi’s and just about any other breed imaginable. While some of these beagle mixes are due to improper supervision and not spaying or neutering, many are of these dogs are deliberately bred. In some cases, by people who are hoping to create a new breed eventually, in other cases by people who are wanting to cash on the designer dog market and by still other people simply to see what they will get.
In many cases, people selling a beagle mix as a so-called designer dog will charge as much if not more than the cost of a purebred beagle whose genealogy can be traced back generations. Some even claim that they charge these high prices because both the dam and the sire of these crosses were the best of their individual breeds. The truth is a beagle mix, regardless of the superiority of the parents, is still a mix breed and should never be sold for more than a purebred. These dogs are not accepted by any of the national kennel clubs and designer breeds are not recognized as breeds.
While eventually some of these beagle mixes may become a breed of their own for now they are simply a mix breed and a mutt by any other name is still a mutt whether it is labeled as a designer dog or not.
That doesn’t mean that a beagle cross can’t make a good pet. Crossbreeds are often adopted by people and make excellent and loving pets. Just be sure that you understand that there won’t be a standard as to looks or personality you can go by as these dogs will have a mixture of traits. While one mix may get the best from both breeds they can also get all the worst traits. So, be prepared to accept whatever you get when adopting a mix breed beagle.
