Beagles are a very common pet and is one of the top 5 most popular dogs in the world. They are small, cuddly, have a great temperament and are very affectionate dogs which is why they are so popular in the first place.
Many people buy the Beagle because it is a small dog and they think that it will not require as much exercise as larger breeds. This is actually quite wrong and although very small, these dogs have tremendous nervous energy and need more exercise than most other breeds. It is good to do a little research on different breeds before making your decision. For instance for all their size and speed the greyhound actually does not require too much exercise and a twice weekly outing in the park where they can run round is more than enough. They are genetically fast and do not require exercise to make them so and you will more often than not find them lazing around the place all day.
The Beagle was developed as a hound to track game and although they are kept as companion dogs they were not developed for that. These days you are more likely to see Beagles at the airport working as sniffer dogs.
This meant that they could and did track the whole day and although not very fast were capable of amazing endurance. Their compact and sturdy body has hidden reserves that nobody knows about. The problem is that if people don’t cater to its exercise needs, they tend to get very ill tempered. Aggressive Beagles are very rare however and if you find one, stay away from the owner because it means it’s an abused dog.
Beagles may not be very obedient, and may be very naughty, but aggressive they are not, and they will take to even strangers with little fuss. The only reason why they are good in a family is because they are pack dogs and in the absence of other dogs will include the entire family as the pack. If you have a yard, allowing them to do as they please is the best because there is no expectation from then. What happens when you do this is that because they will tire themselves out playing outside and chasing birds and other small animals around your yard, they will be more disposed to listening to you. Everyone is happy.
