Are you your dogâs personal groomer? If you are, youâve probably stumbled upon a grooming problem or two, or maybe you just want to confirm a specific question on how to properly groom your dog. Itâs possible youâll find the answer you are seeking in the following four questions.
1. By the end of summer, my Australian Shepherdâs coat is always full of burrs and foxtails and I have to clip all his hairs off. How can I keep the burrs out when he runs out in the countryside all the time?
Brushing him thoroughly everyday is the only solution, although not exactly an easy job. The chances are that if you havenât done it up till now you wouldnât be inclined to keep it up. Why let him spend a miserable summer full of painful sticker only to clip his hair off just when he needs it at the beginning of a cold season?
Have him clipped short in late spring or early summer-before the weeds dry up. Heâll come through the summer happier and have some hair grown back by winter.
2. I have a shaggy mixed-breed that I maintain with regular brushing and bathing, but his stools catch in the long hair and stick to his skin. Iâm concerned that he will look funny if I cut the hair in that area. What can I do?
You might try regulating his diet to prevent soft stools, but in the meantime, itâs better to cut the hair even if it looks funny. Be careful, though, because some dogs instinctively move toward the scissors as you touch the hair.
3. My Beagle gets a bath once a month and he scratches a lot. Is one bath monthly too often?
Once a month bathing might be too often for some dogs. Be sure you are getting all the shampoo rinsed out. Pet grooming shops use a spray hose because thatâs really the only way to be sure of getting all the soap out. Go to a hardware store and get one that simply pushes onto the faucet. Also, be sure that your dog gets a balanced diet for a healthy coat and skin and that he doesnât have fleas.
4. Iâve recently learned that there is a clip particularly for Cocker Spaniels. Should they be clipped or is it a matter of personal choice?
Any dog that is kept brushed, clean, and healthy is a good-looking dog. Clipping will turn your furry, loving dog into a gorgeous, elegant blueblood. Why not have it done just once so youâll at least know what youâre missing? One advantage to having him clipped regularly is that his ears and toenails will be looked-after, and Cocker Spaniels have a tendency to have trouble with both.

Do dogs enjoy grooming session?
I wonder whether my shihtsu enjoys her grooming session. Her hair was cut real short this time round. Do you all think our furkids will mind if they look ugly?
it depends on the dog and how much they like other people besides you. when I groom my dog and cut her hair, (she is a long hair chiuahah) she loves it, when I took her to the groomer they damn near had to sedate her. And i think that your dog will enjoy being cool for the summer, my dog does.

If the grooming is being done by a good and professional dog groomer, it is a pleasant experience for most dogs. They make sure that they handle animals in a gentle manner and are aware of the strokes that a dog responds positively to, and which he doesn’t like. I guess your shihtsuh is feeling pretty happy now in the warmer season with less hair, since she will be keeping cool a lot better. Beauty is only in the eyes of the human beings. The dog’s happy as long as he’s healthy and comfortable in his own skin.

My Tzu likes being cut but the bath is another thing. She just stands there with her head down like she is so humiliated. As far as minding if they are ugly, when she is shaggy or dirty her personality doesn’t change. She still plays and cuddles. But when I pick her up from the groomer she has bows in her hair and she really does seem to prance a little. I think they feel better clean and trimmed. I do!

It depends on the dog and the groomer! Puppies should be groomed by a professional groomer so they get used to it, hence less trouble when you want them groomed when they’re grown up.
You should be careful about groomers too! Some groomers will sedate your dog (They should never do so, not unless you consent to it first) simply because it makes their jobs easier! So if you want to feel reassured before leaving your precious little dog with a groomer … Do some homework! Find out about the services they offer, quality etc. Always check their diploma as well! Many people open grooming parlours when they are not fully qualified. A fully qualified groomer will have be properly insured as well.
Although groomers really prefer it when you leave your dog to them … I would always make a point of being there first session. Some groomers will tel you they’d rather you didn’t but then it’s your dog! You have every right to see how things go, avoids you getting told later on that your dog needed sadted (When in fact he/she probably didn’t).
Will our furkids mind if they look ugly? Well i don’t think it would bother too much but when you keep long haired dogs … You really need to keep their coats groomed regulalry to avoid problems.
I have to say … I have yet to see an ugly dog !!!
Best wishes

if the owners keep up with brushing in between going to the groomer and the groomer actually interacts with the dog instead of just plopping it around to groom it, they usually do.
the key is that the owner shouldn’t feel bad, guilty or anxiety when you drop the dog off at the groomer. they don’t know how to take it and they definitely pick up on it, so then they associate going to the groomers with negative vibes from you…hence, don’t enjoy the visit.
but if you feel good about taking the dog to the groomer and you like your groomer and are friendly when you go, then the dog will most likely enjoy it.
the same goes for going to the vet.
