How Do You Train a 8 Week Old Beagle to Potty Outdoors During the Winter?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Beagle!

My wife and I have trainned our Beagle puppy to potty outdoors and to let us know when he has to potty, but now that is getting colder outside he does not want to go outside. I carry him outside, he may pee-pee, but not poop, or will he just sit there and shiver. We know he has to go because we learned his sniffing. Do we have to now train him to potty indoors? Or is ther a way to get him to potty outdoors still?

We had the same problem with my Jack Russell. We just kept taking him out and rewarding him when we went. I would recommend buying your dog a coat though, Beagles don’t have very thick fur. Try walking him around too, so he doesn’t stay in one place and get colder.

tough love my friend!!! make him stay outside until he does!! reward him with a treat when he poops!! As he is pooping say Poop good boy!! after awhile you will be able to command the poop making it more convienent to you outside on cold winter nights-you could also paper train him to a nice sheltered spot in your yard!

Get little dog fleece boots from Petco or Petsmart.

keep a wee pad inside for accidents, and keep taking him outside…he will get use to the weather…when it snows, you might have to clear a place for him (we had to do this with a puppy before)…and as silly as some people think they are, you could also buy a dog sweater for him (we did)

Do some reading up on cage training (aka crate training). Our first pup took 6 months & lots of accidents to train, our second took 2 months and 2 accidents to train… with the second we used cage training. But it’s important to really understand the psychology behind the method & the cage… it shouldn’t be used for punishement, don’t put it out of the way of the rest of the pack (your family), etc, etc… it’s their cave / safe haven, etc, etc.

Ensure you always praise your puppy by giving a little treat, and voicing and showing your excitement (even if you feel like an idiot!) every time he/she pees or poops outside.

    It really works :)

Crate your pup in the home where he can see you, take him out and while he is doing his routine of sniffing & routing around tell him "go pee-pee" or whatever you use. Once he pee’s praise him and continue to tell him again. If he doesn’t poop, take him in and crate him with no play time. Do this again & again & again. You also need to watch your feeding schedule. If he eats 1st thing in the morning he should be ready to poop by dinner time, but as a young pup it should be faster. Patience and persistance and routine pay off. Sometimes, walking for a bit will help him go poop. The weather you can’t change, I know I live in Alaska, but you can get him a small jacket. Good luck.

Good freakin luck, I just knew I could do it,and I failed. Try treats, and only give treats for that, they are smart little hounds, people think they are airheads but beagles have them fooled, good luck

Shovel a path for him to the grass and keep it free from snow. Make sure there is enough space that you have shoveled for him to do his thing. You just have to wait and eventually he will get used to it.

Praise and a treat for all good behavior eventually eliminating the treat. my dogs are 12 and 13, I still praise occasionally for pooh-pooh. the word good is sweet music to them. the best way to correct bad behavior is to ignore or shun the dog. if the behavior is really bad a loosely rolled up newspaper light swat to the rear end is effective. you should reserve this to very limited situations and eventually move to just swatting your hand. it is the noise not the contact that lets them know they are being corrected. when a dog is doing something destructive like going to a corner in your house to potty a great correction tool is a coffee can with 6 or 7 pennies in it. if you can toss it near the dog when it is doing the bad thing, not after, this is especially effective if you can do it without the dog seeing you. the dog will associate this noise with the undesired activity. remember dogs learn by association. desired behavior deserves a pleasurable experience for them. beagles are a tough breed so some extra patients are required on your part. if you are diligent and understanding you will have a good doggy citizen within a few months. if not, both you and the dog will be somewhat miserable for years – your fault. also the penny can is especially effective for correcting excessive barking, a beagle trait. I highly recommend puppy kindergarten you will learn more than the animal. Remember, you will get years of enjoyment with your pet if you take the time now. 2 to 4 months will go far.

i have to agree with the last answer as well….tough love. Mine still hates to go out in the cold, especially when the snow is on the ground and he is 6. Beagles are sooooooo smart(even tho they act kinda dingy), so don’t let him/her take advantage of you. Be persistent, not mean, and reward him when he poops outside. He’ll always remember that part ,if nothing else!
