How to Teach a Beagle Not to Howl at an Early Age?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Beagle!

This year i’m allowed to get a puppy. I want a beagle but my parents say they howl too much. I’ve already found the perfect one on petfinder so i need to know if there is any way to teach them not to howl at an early age. That’s really the only problem my parents have with the breed so help?

My beagle is two years old. What you are asking is impossible unless you found some sort of "miracle beagle!"

Mine isn’t even big on howling, but oh boy, do beagles like to talk! Its what they were bred to do! It would be like asking a talkative person to not speak but once a week!

I did all the positive reinforcement immediately when I brought her home, and the good news is that now that she is two years old and an adult–she will be quiet on command. However, that took me two long years to achieve and some people can never teach their beagles to be quiet!

We almost got kicked out of our apartment and it was a long, long process to get her to be quiet! Also, beagles are very smart dogs and very difficult to train. If your beagle is not with you almost constantly the first two years, the dog will howl in your absence…howl when crated…howl when you leave…howl when you get home…howl when excited…howl when she sees something interesting…howl at the mailman…howl at the people down the road… Well, you get the idea. Beagles like to talk.

The problem is that beagles like to talk so much that they can howl for hours upon hours. Not just howling while the mailman is in front of the house, but then they realize how much fun howling is and they just keep going!

My 8 week old puppy would howl almost 6 hours the entire night through! I didn’t think it was even possible for a puppy that little to be so loud! Your parents are smart. Be glad that they are letting you get a dog, and pick another dog that will work out better for your family. If you insist on getting a beagle and your parents don’t like the noise then they are going to hate the dog and thats not a good situation for anyone to be in.

I’ve had 2 beagles in my life. The one that I have now is a 3 year old rescue dog. All together, i have 6 dogs in my house right now. She is the one that bark last and least. When she does bark, she howls, but only for a very short time. I’ve never, ever had a problem with beagles barking/howling constantly.

They have a howl/bark: it’s a trait of the breed. It can’t be ‘untaught’. You can teach them how to be quiet. I never understood that tho — I want my dogs to bark when they hear a strange noise or someones at the door. It’s how they communicate. People talk, dogs bark – fact of life!

You may want to talk to a trainer on this one. I have 2 female beagles and neither one of them howl, but I know many who have males and they do howl. I hope this helps and good luck. By the way beagles are great dogs.
